THE PROGRAMME features works to show-off the organ in Penshurst Church – surely one of the few village churches to actually have a 32’ reed! From Bach himself to Liszt’s virtuoso homage to him, we’ll have some of Haydn’s tiny pieces written for a mechanical flute-clock and a movement from one of Mozart’s Epistle sonatas… Alan Ridout’s dramatic portrayal of Jacob and the Angel is an complete contrast Holloway’s delightfulScherzo written whilst he was organist at the Crystal Palace (he was actually conducting a choir practise in a church down the road when the palace was burning down!).
There are also virtuoso works from Frenchmen Guilmant and Grison – plus a beautiful work written by the famous British organist, Harold Darke (1888-1976), better-known for his timeless and much-loved setting of In the bleak winter - and whose granddaughter is one of the esteemed members of our Penshurst church choir.
