Edenbridge parish church
Our next event will take place at 3.00 pm on 10th May with a visit to the parish church of St Peter & St Paul (TN8 5BD) in picturesque Edenbridge. Edenbridge parish church deserves a visit all to itself, because, as with Hythe, it contains two organs played from the same console. After an introduction to the church and the organ, members will be able to play the instrument until about 4.00.
There is also the option to arrive earlier and take either the Graveyard Trail or Historic Town Trail as added inducements (see guide to Town Trail attached to this email). See the guide to the Graveyard Trail at:
https://edenbridgeparishchurch.org/1000-2/
We suggest allowing at least an hour for one of these options, so you would need to arrive by 2.00 pm. Also, very close to the Church is Eden Valley Museum which is open from 10.00 - 4.30 pm on a Saturday, (entrance is free). Refreshments will be available following our visit to the church, between 4.00 - 5.00 pm at Hennessy’s Tea Rooms where tables have been reserved for KCOA members (and which is very conveniently located close to the church). Please do make use of this arrangement to purchase your tea, as the proprietors have gone to some trouble to make the tearooms available to us.
About the organ (3 manual and pedal organ with 52 speaking stops)
In 1990 the organ by Bryceson, Hele 1908 (renovated by Griffen & Stroud 1931), was installed in the church from St. James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, as the West end organ; combined with the former Lewis & Co instrument (now in the Chancel - divided case on north wall either side of mediaeval window). The mobile console, which is made from Japanese oak, allows the organist to play both parts of the organ separately or together; the West end organ is controlled by drawstops, the Chancel organ by stopkeys. (Details on NPOR reference D07748.)
Directions
By Car
Edenbridge is situated on the B2026 south of the M25 (at junction 6). From the A25 at Oxted, follow the B269 then the B2026 to Edenbridge. There is free parking in the town (TN8 5AR) but you may wish to park along the edge of the churchyard where there is a row of about 35 parking spaces. These can be accessed from the south (coming from Tunbridge Wells direction) by going straight across the roundabout just after the Old Eden pub, then turning right just before Eden Sports clinic. It’s a narrow road but you can see the church lychgate on the left and the parking spaces are adjacent to the wall. Alternatively, there are also several free car parks in the town which are well signposted and can be located on the map (attached).
By train
Edenbridge Town station is on the London to Uckfield line, while Edenbridge station (about 1 mile from the town centre) is on the Redhill to Tonbridge line.Cost
The cost of the meeting will be just £3 per head, as you will need to pay for your tea at Hennessy's Tea Rooms. (Correct change will be appreciated, as ever!)
