This month… Alongside Bach’s radiant D major (a great keep-fit piece) three varied pieces of Vierne – from his beautifully reflective Berceuse to the fury of the Toccata. The wonderfully expressive and sensual Belgian, Joseph Jongen, is heard in the Two Pieces written in his final year.
The Hungarian Zsolt Gárdonyi (b.1946) is a less-familiar figure. Having spent his initial years in Budapest, at 24 he moved to Germany – first to Berlin and then in Würzburg. His has pursued a career as both teacher and performer. His Grand Choeur arose from an improvisation in the 1970s: inspired by French examples, it’s an exciting, rumbustious romp which demands considerable virtuosity and élan.
A note on the organ… I apologise that the organ has been throwing tantrums recently. We are hoping to get the technical person needed to come and sort out the issues.
